What Does Tuhao (土豪) Actually Mean?
土豪 means dirt rich: new money, loud taste, zero apologies. The story of China's favorite insult, tuhao gold, and why we put the word on the label.

Two characters. 土 (tǔ) means dirt. 豪 (háo) means grand, powerful, rich. Put them together and you get tuhao: dirt rich. New money with the ground still on its boots.
It was built as an insult. We put it on the label.
The literal meaning of 土豪
土 is earth. Soil. Dirt. In slang it also means unpolished, country, tacky. 豪 is the character you find in 豪华 (luxury) and 富豪 (tycoon). Grand. Heroic. Loaded.
So 土豪 reads two ways at the same time: a rich person, and a rich person with no refinement. Both readings are correct. That is the whole point of the word.
Say it "too-how." Pinyin: tǔháo.
From landlord slur to internet legend
The word is old. A century ago, 土豪 meant the local landed bosses who ran the countryside. "土豪劣绅" (local tyrants and evil gentry) was a literal political slogan, and not a friendly one. For decades the word sat in history books gathering dust.
Then in 2013 the Chinese internet dug it up and gave it a new job: the label for the country's flashiest new rich. Gold phones. Chrome supercars. Buying two of everything because choosing is for other people. A meme went viral that year: 土豪,我们做朋友吧. "Tuhao, let's be friends." Half mockery, half application form.
When Apple shipped the gold iPhone 5s that fall, China immediately named the color 土豪金: tuhao gold. The BBC ran a story on the word. Oxford's dictionary editors said they were tracking it for inclusion. An insult had become a lifestyle with its own signature color.
Tuhao vs. old money
Old money whispers. Quiet luxury, beige cashmere, logos sanded off, wealth you are supposed to sense but never see.
Tuhao is the opposite instinct. If you have it, why whisper?
The sneer inside the word is really a rule: being rich is fine, being loud about it is not. We do not accept the rule. 新钱也比没钱. New money beats no money.
Why we put an insult on the label
Every word like this eventually gets taken by the people it was thrown at. They said dirt rich and meant dirt. We heard gold with the ground still on it.
That is the brand. 土豪 printed heavy in gold on black, worn by people who did not start with anything and are not pretending otherwise. The Logo hoodie carries the word itself. The Chain tee carries the attitude. Limited runs. No restocks. Subtle is weak.
